“ReBoot” by Tara Basi foregrounds questions of AI ethics, beginning with the creation of a mining robot whose programming goes disastrously wrong. From the beginning it is a sense of identity that drives the plot. As the robot searches for meaning and tries to demystify its origin it raises deeper questions about free will and artificial intelligence being able to transcend its programming. In uncovering disturbing secrets about its creation, the narrative highlights the moral burden of those who design autonomous systems. Blending dark humour and violence, the story questions how far humans should go in their quest to create  machines capable of independent thought and action. 

I made the images to go with the story and through it I made my gradual breakthroughs into digital art. Some of the art work here is from that adventure, but some are recycled as collage material into new ideas that transform some of the paintings I've been working on. So, to my mind we have water – flow – rhythm – root – tree branch structure – venation interconnected not just by their visual nature but also by the physical qualities of both water and surface. To weave into this any ideas around AI and consciousness would have been impossible to me, until my small experiments with collage overspilled into my painting.

My USP here I believe is that as far as I can ascertain other artists explore this area by linking together AI, film, performance, etc and I don't. I use paint, collage and print.
